2146 - Accumulated News

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

A series of 24 grouped columns is tucked into the woods behind the South Field at deCordova - columns made of newspaper...lots of newspaper. Steven Siegel's 'Big, with rift' (2009) is comprised of over 25 cubic yards of newspaper, stacked around frames of Douglas Fir and over-planted on top with elements of the surrounding, still thriving foliage. This piece is meant to evolve over time with exposure to the elements as the paper slowly returns to the soil.

Covered with both items of personal significance and traces of the artist's finger strokes, Jim Dine's 'Two Big Black Hearts" (1985) serves as a perfect anchor and focal point in the South Field at deCordova. This is but a small portion of detail present on the pair of twelve-foot tall bronze hearts.

2144 - Instant Music

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum

A bit of carefully-crafted aluminum embedded in concrete allows anyone to be musical, courtesy of 'The Musical Fence' (1980) by Paul Matisse - originally commissioned by the City of Cambridge, MA as a public art installation, this wonderful piece had to be relocated to a more isolated home like deCordova after local residents complained about the frequency of participation; passers-by were engaging in impromptu performances at any opportunity, even in the wee hours of the morning.

2143 - Ball of Bricks

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

Covered in bricks custom-cast by the artist, Lars-Erik Fisk, 'deCordova Ball' (1998) echoes forms and details found in the original deCordova house situated on the hill above.

2142 - Consider Your Footprints

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

Tucked into a small nook of shrubbery in Alice's Garden stands 'Feral Goose' (2005) by Kitty Wales. The deCordova site sums this piece up better than I could:

"Feral Goose is one of five bronze geese Wales cast for DeCordova’s 1995 exhibition, Strokes of Genius: Mini Golf by Artists. This work addresses the ways in which we alter natural animal habitats through the creation of artificial landscapes such as golf courses. This realistic goose seems to confront the viewer in hostile confusion over a golf ball, which it clutches in its beak. Feral Goose echoes the message of many of Wales’ installations, asking the viewer to consider more fully the footprint we make on the natural world and the debris we leave behind."

2141 - Organic Entity

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

Cast in bronze but appearing to be a collection of wildly twisting vines and branches, the organic entity of Richard Rosenblum's 'Venusvine' (1990) stands sentry-like over Alice's Garden at deCordova - we found this work to be one of the more fascinating at the park.

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

This particular iteration of John Wilson's 'Eternal Presence' (1987) is nestled on the slopes of Alice's Garden at deCordova - at about half-size, this is a study for the final 7-foot tall version that resides outside the National Center for Afro-American Artists in Boston.

2139 - How Many Times?

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

At over 18-feet in height, Douglas Kornfeld's 'Ozymandias' (2009) holds a prominent place on the Main Lawn at deCordova - I wonder how many times this piece has prompted this sort of playful activity.

2138 - A Gentle Warning

<img src="http://pixels.slpro.com/blogpix/gntlwrnng-thumb.jpg"

b/wednesday

'Eve Celebrant' (1991) by Marianna Pineda offers a seemingly gentle warning with one hand while the other bears the temptation of a fruit of knowledge and abundance - many photographic possibilities are present here, and this particular piece merits some additional study when we next return to deCordova.

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

Just up the stone steps from the Thoreau tribute in Alice's Garden are three small bronzes by Cape Cod artist Breon Dunigan - all three pieces unite furniture leg shapes with more organic forms, this one entitled 'Guardian' (2003).

2134 - Top Hat Tribute

Found at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

Alice's Garden is a bit of lovely landscaping at deCordova showcasing a group of smaller pieces that are situated amidst the greenery - this life-sized bronze top hat is a piece by Christopher Frost called "A Mile From Any Neighbor From Walden" (1999) that bears tribute to Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau had originally chosen Flint's Pond as his wooded retreat, but was denied access by the farmer who owned the land - he had to settle for nearby Walden Pond. One wonders if the literary masterpiece that resulted from his stay would have been different had his original choice of site been available.

<img src="http://pixels.slpro.com/blogpix/ptthr-thumb.jpg"

Found at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA

This is but a small detail of a much larger abstract by Michael Rees entitled 'Putto 4 Over 4' (2004) - using a variety of media and techniques including use of computer generated wireframe modeling, this piece melds four fingers and four legs into a beautifully oxidized creature of fantasy.
