This is as close to a press release as I'll likely ever have occasion to post here, but I wanted make some sort of announcement with regard to a subtle change in presentation that took place here last week.
When I first began my photoblog in the fall of 2004, I was aware of the potential of the medium and method of publishing as a form of electronic entertainment - it didn't take long before I began to consider the idea of 'branding' the site in a more official capacity by seeking registration of frame of mind with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. So began a long, but quite precisely timed process that has finally resulted in a registration. As is indicated in several locations on the site now, frame of mind is now a registered service mark - to make a claim in a mark is one thing, but to be granted registration implies a whole new level of protection in terms of use of the mark.
I don't know if any other photoblog has established a trademark or service mark registration, so this may be a first - call me crazy, or call me forward-thinking but at least I know now that frame of mind and my use of the name has some degree of federal protection. Applying for this registration was simple, yet made substantially more challenging due to extensive advance research into the process of doing-it-yourself - I may write an account of the experience in more detail at some point in the future. After all is said and done however, there's something to be said for having gone through the process and seen how a less publicized aspect of US government functions. The wheels of the USPTO turn slowly, but absolutely like clockwork.
